new hobby

after this somewhat hectic busy week at work i've been looking forward to the weekend (well techincally my days off in the middle of the week... i have to work weekends normally).

rather then spend my time off doing the same old same old i've decided i need to expand my life expereince and try some new things... after all i did come down here to new zealand to try a new go at existence.

so to start off with i've made my way to the beach cause frankly i haven't been here in far TOO long! boy do i remember how much i LOVE the beach too!

frankly there's only so much just hanging out and looking at the beauty one can do though, and i figured i might need to bring something for backup doing (aren't you impressed? me with my tiny brain figured this one out!)

after exploring the maori gallery in the museum this week i was given an idea of something i could try out...

one of the neatest artifacts i thought was maori fishing hooks and tools which gave me the idea why not try fishing?

so i brought with me to the beach my brand new fishing rod that i picked up at the warehouse (a store where the song assures me "everyone gets a bargain") to try out fishing...

one of the benefits of having a job again... i have money to buy things like this!

you know even though it's just me standing here doing pretty much nothing... i'm liking fishing... despite my short attention span (hey can you blame a dude with a brain the size of a peanut not being able to focus well?) i have two things to do!

first is to make sure that my fishing line and pole are doing their thing, and then when i'm starting to zone out i have beautiful ocean to look at...

after an hour of nothing happening though i was starting lose a little bit of heart... humans have been fishing for thousands of years, and yet i couldn't catch a single fish after a few hours!?!

don't they say there are hundreds of fish in the sea?

then suddenly there was tug on my line... having watched a show on fishing many years ago in drumheller i remembered this is what one is waiting for when they are fishing! i started to reel in my line... the thrill and exceleration from this struggle of life an death... what could it possibly be on the end of my line?

well okay so my first catch ever isn't exactly going to get me on any fishing magazine covers, but at least i caught something!!!

obviously going to have to try fishing again, and soon. i bought the rod might as well use it, and hey i had a lot of fun... almost too much in the moments of reeling in my bootfish... something deep with in my dinosaurian instincts was being fanned by the thrill of the "hunt"... granted fishing was more a pursuit of theropods of baryonx or spinosaurus, but i think i'm going to risk being a rebel t-rex and have another go... keep you posted people of the web wide world...

diverse museum

well apart from the unsettling and kinda scary event of the other night things have stuck to the nice and stable end of the spectrum...

work carries on perfectly predictable in it's uneventfulness...

that is minus the one outstanding assignment i've left uncompleted...

that assignment of course being how ms. rhonwyn told me i had to explore all the museum galleries so i could improve my knowledge of the museum, and thus guard it better...

i've already checked out both the prehistoric and modern natural history galleries of the 3rd floor, but the galleries of the 2nd still remained a mystery... till today!

taking two large chunks of time out of my patrol of the lobby today i set out intent to get the WHOLE museum under my belt...
my first break i decided i'd take on the pacific cultures gallery...
considering how small the museum is (globally speaking mind you... for a museum it's a fair sized one) they sure crammed a lot of the pacific in here!
this display area is dedicated to the various cultures that live on islands throughout the worlds biggest ocean... who knew there were so many? well not me anyways in answer to that question...

the first thing one is greeted by is a wall of boats! so many different kinds was really cool!

further into the gallery there is a dozen or so display cases, and in each on there is a single culture... meaning that there is around a dozen cultures represented in here!!!

the items and artifacts on display in these cases varies from masks, sculptures, jewelery, clothes, tools, to weapons, and even whole boats! your typical human museum fair really...

not my area of "expertise" but then again with at brain as small as mine what would be such an area LOL

entering the main chamber of this multi roomed gallery was a movie. i couldn't afford the time needed to stick around a watch the film (which probably could make me a lot more proficient in this gallery) tonight as i had a WHOLE floor to cover while also guarding so i had to press on my tour of the pacific islands...

wow there was a big stickish thing at the very end of the gallery that looked kinda important based on the display mount... have to be sure and come back later to learn more about this thing, but again had so little time just know it's here for future reference...

now when people who live on islands are typically shown on TV and in books their depicted as pretty friendly and nice people, but man based on a few of the displays of their weapons they look as scary and well equipped for trouble as a team of navy seals (man i don't want to picture military associated seals... i lived with a few when i first moved here, and ordinary seals are no fun!)

wow they have some cool but creepy statues too... this fish was cool in a spooky kinda way...
overall i think my favorite thing in the whole gallery though had to be the cool and crazy masks these guys made and used!

**************************

now with that gallery explored i only had one more permanent exhibit to go... but it would have to wait until later in my shift. fortunately uncomplicated this plan nothing of interest or bother occurred. so off on another round of exploring i went...

this time a truly new zealand gallery... the one on the maori... new zealands indigenous people
it's a pretty big gallery too (though it only has to fit in stuff from new zealand... which means they pack a LOT more maori stuff compared to pacific island stuff)

they have some really pretty artifacts i have to say... according to one of the signs the various artifacts in this case are made of either bone (whale?!? oh no!) or stuff called green stone (i wonder if it's the same stuff that kills superman???)... again real pretty... and kinda shiny...

at first i thought these were big carvings to help remind maori children about punctuation in the form of an explanation mark, but reading the display i discovered these were actually clubs! (but they shouldn't be used on me as i just used the punctuation mark of their like in that sentence!)
these green stone tools are real important to the maori i've deduced as they appear in almost every display case... must also be worth something too, as i can't help but notice considerable amounts of security equipment in this gallery have. important to note as the security guard!

one of my favorite displays was on how they DIG up evidence of ancient maori stuff... yeah you read that right people of the innerweb... they dig maori remains up just like fossils!

well okay not "just" like, but similar enough that i really got what this display was about... fine tune digging, mapping, and collecting... takes me back to the glory days at the tyrrell when i got to dig...

man the maori have really cool carvings! really tall and intricate... i just wish i knew what they meant or represented... i'll have to come back later and spend some time figuring that out too...

come to think of it these remind of some of the cool carvings made by canadian first nations people i saw in north vancouver during my BC quest

this is also the site of a cool maori building (which i learnt is actually just a model of a MUCH bigger version of this building). all those sparkles you see in the photo are the reflection off shells that are embedded in the carvings of the building... making the eyes seem alive...

that was a cool as gallery... i just wish i had more to time to check it out (which i will make later) cause i didn't learn a lot about the specifics about the maori...

it didn't help that this gallery had a lot of real maori words for stuff in here... i have problems with human language at the best of times that alone when it is one i don't speak...

oh well ms. rhownyn will be happy that i finished my tour of the museum here today...

i even picked up a traditional maori ritual for greeting people. you simple get in close and touch noses... which as you can see in this last photo i'm doing to one of the maori sculptures to welcome myself into this section of the building. cause i intend on coming back here again soon...

mustn't be afraid...

okay people of the innerweb i don't want to sound like i'm going crazy or anything, but i think the botanic garden is haunted...

now before you label me as crazy or scared of the dark (come to think of it i am kinda scared of the dark... i should get a few spot lights today so that i can light up my home tonight!!!) here's what happened...

so like every night i diligently made sure i was home before dark (in addition to being kinda terrified to the max in the lack of light the park isn't lite at night so i'd have to find my way through the scary pitch black). as there's not much to do in the woods at night i went to sleep like every other night... only this wasn't like every other night...

now i can sleep content normally in new zealand as they don't have ANY remotely scary native animals (well out of the water anyway)... little did i know it was habitated by spooks!

at 2am i was awoken by voices. at first in my sleepy daze i thought i was still dreaming... that is till i saw the LIGHT!!!

if you don't believe me just look at this picture!!!!!!

a bright moving light... that made it's way from the dell's entrance towards ben's fabled maze...

while it moved by on the path above me i distinctly heard voices... two of them i think, and though i didn't make out most of what they said to each other (cause they were only close for a second) i could have swore i heard one of them say "otago museum"... which just makes this sounds crazier now that i think about it...

now i'm not making this up people of the web wide world! something really really weird and freaky happened last night! i know you're probably saying that ben's story about the scary maze i supposedly live on the edge of has me rattled... maybe a little... NOW...

i'm serious this wasn't something my peanut sized brain dreamed up (again i have a picture to prove i saw something!). i think there's a cemetery around here somewhere... maybe the ghosts are using the dell as a short cut...

i'm REALLY scared of ghosts... so i hope this is one of those times that i'm wrong (which is fortunately most of the time... except when i predict bad things like this...)

naturally a museum

well my new... strangely... normal life goes on...

considering ALL the trials and tribulations i've gone through since my being fired at the tyrrell up till my meeting the governments immigration criteria it's hard to get used to this stable existence i'm enjoying at moment...

i'm almost getting paranoid to be honest that something dramatic will happen, but fortunately there's enough going on to keep my mind off things...

the main distraction is of course work... and as security guard of the otago museum i've always got securing to do.

having been on the job nearly three whole months i've totally got my technique and procedure for guarding down to a science. standing in the very open lobby (as you can see here in the pic above) i have an outstanding view of all the entrances to the museum itself and its galleries too.

of course last month you'll recall that my boss ms. rhonwyn told me i had to shake up this guarding strategy by taking sometime each shift to explore the insides and displays of the museum.

however to be a little frank people of the innerweb i haven't been as diligent in this task as i should be...

you see ms. rhonwyn has been out of the country for the last month touring other museums for... well come to think of it she never told me why... uh some reason or another...

however while on duty here tonight i got a call from her that made me realize that i'd forgotten this explore the otago museum assignment...

from her current stop over at the museum of tasmania, in australia, while looking at the impressive specimen of muttaburrasaurus ms. rhonwyn was reminded of me, and so decided to check up on me...

she was a little disappointed to find out i hadn't been wandering the museum... in my defense i just wanted to make sure i was doing a REALLY good job of guarding while she was gone so that i wouldn't let anyone down.

however having made ms. rhonwyn unhappy with me i headed right off to finish off the natural history gallery...

its got some cool stuff i must say

giants crabs...

giant albatrosses...

all kinds of other cool birds and animals

uh "surprisingly" for a natural history gallery even MORE animals and plants...

then the biggest shock of all... a display on modern extinctions at the end...
now i ranted about typical museum extinction exhibits when i explored the first half of this hall a month ago... but that was about prehistoric extinctions, and to be specific their almost always about us dinosaurs...

this was a display about the plights of current species in new zealand, and how many of the amazing local animals are endangered. most of it due to humans bringing critters they weren't supposed to over here and letting them run loose...

having read the signs on here about these invading species i now can understand why bio-security and the department of conservation were SO difficult on my immigrating here to new zealand... in theory i could do a lot of damage here... just like these other visiting animals...

that's a scary thought. i'm going to have to go and reexamine my lifestyle and REALLY make sure it follows my conservation directives

okay well that's one gallery of 6 down... only 5 more to go before ms. rhonwyn returns in a... WEEK!!!... oh man... got go people of the innerweb... keep you posted though!

signs of success

well things have been fairly uneventful in my life people of the innerweb as of late. a bit of a shock to hear i'm sure, cause it has been a shock to me!

this week a fairly noteworthy event has occurred to disrupt my newly emerging normality though...

i stand here at the entrance to the dell (my new home here in the botanic garden) and admire the new OFFICIAL sign denoting my occupancy of the area.

it's official issue from the department of conservation, and is part of my new protection program. man that just sounds so cool, having my own conservation program... and it is even cooler then it sounds!

oh wait how rude of me people of the innerweb... i haven't told you that story yet have i!

well it all started yesterday morning...

a visitor arrived bright and early in the morning at the park... not an unusual occurrence i guess, come to think of it. we do get a LOT of visitors here a day!... but this would be no ordinary visitor...

she probably would have gone unnoticed like the countless hundreds others who have passed through the gardens since i moved in, but there was something about her that was different...

a presence i guess would be the best way to describe it... the very way she walked about the upper gardens with a sense of purpose denoted something unusual about her being here...

like the very capable and diligent headmaster of the gardens that he is, ben the gardener picked up on her within only a few minutes. being a much braver creature then me (it must be noted people of the innerweb despite my being a potentially fierce t-rex i'm something of a "chicken"... well in more then one way i guess. we t-rexs are related to chickens...) ben went up to personally investigate our new comer...

he was surprised to learn that she already knew who he was. even more surprising was her request for him to assist her in finding me...

now of course at the time i was unaware of any of this going on below me in the main part of the garden. all i know is that i got a phone call on my still newish "cell" phone from ben asking me to come meet as he put it a "special visitor".

so like a good tenant i started on my way to meet up with my landlord, and who ever this mysterious visitor ben had spoken of... having no clue as to just how important a meeting this would end up being...

ben in the meantime being the great guy he is tried to be a friendly host/facilitator by making small talk. our guest though would have none of it...

leaving poor ben in something of a lurch. he's not the sort to have people be unsociable to him (which is funny i guess... you'd think someone who spends a lot of time around plants would be used to not being talked to...)

instead the stranger seemed to be observing and scrutinizing everything as she walked. sizing up the whole garden for some unknown reason...

it was about this time that i entered the picture... in more then one way in fact! cause hey here i am in this picture hehehehe...

ben proceeded to introduce me to the stranger. from whom he had only gotten a name... and who she worked for.

"traumador this is agent hamiliton. she's from the department of conservation, and she's here to see you" ben said as politely as he could, though it was clear he wanted to leave the presence of our slight icy guest...

for a second i was really excited! man i'd been waiting for the D.O.C. (that's fancy movie type talk for department of conservation! who thought i'd get to cut down a big long title like that just like a movie boy oh boy!) to contact me for a little while here. cutting my enthusiasm short...

"excellent. thank you for your assistance," agent hamiliton said to ben. "you may go now."

wow that was almost rude i thought. she then turned to me. "we can get started now mr. tyrannosaur."

oh man i was primed. get started on my conservation program... not that i knew what that actually meant, but it sounded big and impressive...

"i'll need to see exactly where you've established your new habitat," requested (well almost came across as more of an order come to think of it) agent hamilton.

as i lead the way to the dell i started asking a ton of questions about agent hamilton, the D.O.C., and all sorts of other stuff... come to think of it why i asked her whether santa was ACTUALLY real may have been bad for a first impression...

much to my surprise she simply ignored my questions and was writing things down in her notebook... which as far as i can tell is part of her arm. cause she never puts it down...

due to her lack of talking to me... which was quite disconcerting i assure you people of the innerweb... the walk up to the dell seemed to take forever... it probably didn't help that we slowed down a number of times cause she had to take notes...

at the entrance to the dell we stopped. that surprised me as i was going to take her down to show her my home.

"i'm not properly appraised nor equipped for that in depth an investigation today," she countered my direct invitation to go into the dell.

i was confused...

"mr. tyrannosaur the purpose of my visit today is simply to establish the baseline for your protection program," agent hamilton started noting my confounded look. "if i were to enter into your habitat today without proper knowledge of your behaviour or biologic needs, i could cause critical disruptions to your well being."

"uh but i just offered," i said thinking this was 'proper knowledge' enough.

"now i'm going to need to know a few things," she kept going ignoring me. "what is the approximate extent of your territory in the dell?"

"uh," i hesitated. based on her thus far stern and very serious nature i didn't want to answer the part of the dell that wasn't part of ben's fabled scary maze. so i opted for answering"the usable part."

"am i correct in assuming you establish a territory then?" she seemed to be interrogating me... like on a TV show or something...

"i guess so," i was kinda scared now that i'd answer wrong and fail a test or something.

"are you meeting your basic sustenance and shelter needs in this range?" she eyed me.

"huh?" i've never taken a basic sustaining shelter course before!

"you have enough food and acceptable shelter here," agent hamilton seemed to be getting impatient with me.

"oh. yeah, and if not there's a fish and chips shop just across the road," i replied. realizing i hadn't been specific. "uh that's for either more food or shelter."

"right," she seemed unhappy with that response as she wrote in her notes. "lastly what impacts have humans been having directly on your range?"

now as i've been trying to improve my out look on life and not focus on the negatives lately, people of the web wide world i haven't mentioned one of the problems with my new home...

"people walking through the dell or the rest of the garden have... well been kinda, getting scared when they see me," i answered.

"and?" agent hamilton didn't seem happy about that answer either...

"it's just i don't like making people scream is all," i hesitantly replied. i didn't want to get people in trouble, and i worried maybe my answer might do just that...

"consider it taken care of," hamilton looked up from the last note she scribbled down. "we were going to zone this off anyway. i'll just make sure it happens immediately so this noise pollution doesn't bother you anymore."

what? zone off? am i playing a sport suddenly that i was unaware of?

"right," she interrupted my pondering of her last statement. "that concludes my initial queries for now."

agent hamilton turned and started to walk away from the dell back towards the main gardens...

i was kinda caught off guard by this, and had to run to catch up with her. when i did without looking agent hamilton started talking to me...

"now mr. tyrannosaur for the last month and a half you're existence here in new zealand was, to put it gently nebulous," what does my life have to do with space clouds?

"as of this morning you and your case have been completely registered within the department of conservation, and as of such you are now our responsibility. we are going to be taking every precaution and measure we can to ease your integration into new zealand's biosphere, while at the same time hopefully impacting on your existence as little as possible."

"at the same time it must be said that unlike the month and half leading up to now things are going to be a little different," she almost turned to look at me. "you've been allowed to settle into your new surroundings and hopefully adapt to the native ecosystem without interference. more to the point you haven't had to deal with us at the department much. as of today that changes mr. tyrannosaur."

"from here on in you will be officially monitored and checked up on as per standard procedure for endangered species such as yourself. furthermore i must once again remind you of the official protocols and procedures placed on you by your conservation directives. you must remember to adhere to those directives ALL the time from here on in."

"apart from that this concludes this official first checkup," she reached into her pocket. "here is my contact information should you need to contact me about anything, especially your directives. i will be your contact to the department, and as of such don't feel hesitant to talk to me about any problems you might be experiencing."

though i had a gazillion questions i didn't want to invoke her stern look or make her mad by asking them so with that she promptly made her way out of the park...

this morning i was awoken by the sound of what sounded like drills...

investigating i was shocked to discover someone had posted a number of these signs at the entrances to the dell...

their again official issue from the department of conservation which is kinda cool.

so there we go people of the innerweb. quite a bit has happened from one visitor...

all i'm left wondering is why does the sign say "beware" of tyrannosaur... don't you think that will just make people more scared of me?...

getting around

today i decided to go exploring dunedin some more. i haven't been able to just wander and sight see for fun in a really long time people of the web wide world. man it felt good!

i also stumbled upon a neat new place that definately makes my map of dunedin!

the otago train station. here i am marvelling at the nice little garden they have out front of this amazing building... the train station is almost a hundred years old... which for new zealand is pretty old!

inside it's even more impressive. i feel like i'm on a movie set or something!

out of here runs new zealand rail whose even gone to the detail of having their logo designed into the floor of this amazing building.

poking around i found out that you can book rides on the train... holy smokes!!!

heading outside to catch the train i was disappointed to discover that the train had already departed without me...

oh well just little thing. life in dunedin overall is going awesome right now, and i'm not letting this one thing bring me down...

i'll just have to catch it later on i guess.

movie review: jurassic park- the lost world

55things have been going sooooo smoothly around dunedin as of late i managed to kick back the other night (at salmond hall) and watch a movie! funny enough this leads me to yet another...

dinosaur movie review!

since i'd started watching the jurassic park series with owain, i figured i'd keep on watching. bringing us to the second installment jurassic park 2... called the lost world.

now this name carries some weight with us dinosaurs. that is because to us the lost world is a legendary land where the mesozoic never ended (what i was hoping to find during my BC quest). in the lost world we surviving dinosaurs might once again find a remnant of the domain we lost all those millions of years ago... so a movie of the same title better carry some swabamoo!

Jurassic Park: The Lost World

General Summary

after the, dinosaur version of a concentration camp, theme park broke down last movie and many humans died (not to mention some dinos!) the millionaire John Hammond who built Jurassic Park has lost control of his company. The new owner decides he wants to start yet another theme park full of dinosaurs (how original of him...) and is going to go and grab some dinosaurs from "site B". this is where the dinosaurs were being hatched and brought up we're informed before being brought to jurassic park aka "Site A".

plot point: now i'm going to try to avoid commenting on the human side of movies for my reviews cause plenty of good ones already exist no doubt (what with my brain size and all), but there is a big glitch in this site B premise that is dino related. in the first jurassic park we saw them take care of and hatching dinosaur eggs! why is there suddenly a new island for that purpose?

Hammond has since the first movie become something of a dinosaur sympathizer and tries to bring public attention to the plight of the soon to be captivized dinosaurs of site B. to do so Hammond organizes an expedition to document the now thriving free prehistoric population. however to round off his team he tries to recruit mathematician Ian Malcom from the last movie (what again does math or chaos theory have to do with dinosaurs?), but the number cruncher refuses...

that is till the millionaire pulls a fast one and informs Malcom that his palaeontologist girl friend Sarah Harding is ALREADY on the island. Malcom suddenly jumps to the conclusion that the expedition is a rescue mission (what we dinosaurs aren't to be trusted just like that!?!).

heading down the island Malcom meets up with his gal pal, but discovers in addition to his planned team his daughter has come along for the trip too... why i don't know... so after experiencing some of the splendor of the island everyone, EXCEPT Malcom, is primed and psyched to explore this lost world... Malcom being the Dino hater that he is tries to get them off... kinda sit comishly actually if you ask me...

right when i worried that the stegosaurs were going to be the only dinosaurs, and the rest of the movie would be just Malcom's Dinosaurist attitudes the movie picks up.

the evil corporate hunting team shows up to enslave the dinosaurs of the island and put them into the service of tourism. after catching a bunch the bad guys look posed to succeed... the exploration team however hatches a heroic plan to free the captive dinosaurs.

meanwhile the hunting parties leader Roland Tembo discovers a tyrannosaurus nest, and decides to use the chick found within to lure the t-rex bull into a trap so he can shot it...

interrupting this scheme the good guys unleash all manner of fury on the hunters camp as they free a bunch of dinosaurs who completely trash the place. on their way out the good guys stumble on the now wounded t-rex chick who is calling for it's parents. not wanting it to be a cripple the good guys bring it back to doctor it.

however mommy and daddy t-rex show up, and in the process of getting their baby back destroy the good guys camp as well.

leaving both teams stranded on the island. they all decide to work together to get to the old compound on the island to call for help.

along the way the t-rexs show back up and eat a bunch of people, and then the majority that the the rexs miss are polished off by raptors. in the midst of this carnivore confusion Roland manages to tranquilize the daddy t-rex, and the baby is caught... the bad guys make fully ready to ship the two of them back to the mainland for display...

however something goes terribly wrong on the ship carrying daddy, and it crashes into shore unleashing daddy on san francisco. the CEO of bad company orders the tyrannosaur destroyed...
Malcom suddenly has a change of heart on his dinosaur hating ways, and with Hardings help they rescue both the baby, and using it, lure it's daddy to safety where they are both sent back home, and the end scene of the movie is a happily ever after in the lost world...

Dinosaur Stars and Celebreties

so that's Steven Speilberg's sequel to jurassic park in a nutshell. with the success of the first film in 93 and the publics new interest in us dinosaurs Speilberg would go way out of his way to unleash even more dinosaurs in the second movie.

now many of them were returnees from the first film, but this time around many of the herbivores were given more screen this time around. as for the new comers some were big shocks to us dinosaurs watching the casting from the outside!

the new dinosaurs on the movie scene

  • Compsognathus the smallest dinosaur of all time make their debut in the lost world. their inclusion in the movie though a good addition was slightly conterversial. in micheal critons books that the jurassic park movies are based on stated that there should be procompsognathues rather then compsognathuses. a little known fact about the little compsognathus is that they are part of the coelosaur family. the same family that not only us tyrannosaurs are in, but also the dromaesaurs (or sorry raptors... got remember some none palaeo ppl on the innerweb). meaning that compies are direct relatives of BOTH the major starring dinosaurs of this movie. rumour has it that lobbying from among either my cousin larry or the raptors this species change was made for the movie...

  • Mamenchisaurus yet another upset when it came around to the lost world. the role of biggest dinosaur (invetiably played by a sauropod) had been played by a brachiosaurus in the first movie. however due to the critical acclaim and consideration for an oscar the brachiosaur asked for too high a price to reappear in the sequel. with such a small part in this film the humans opted to let the brachiosaur go, and instead cast a new long neck. rather then the obvious choice of an Apatosaurus or Diplodocus (of whom many have been in movies) Speilberg instead opted for their little known (by the public anyway) chinese relative. though two appear only in one scene it brought the longest necked animal of all time to the attention of the human world. this was also seen as an appeasement for the casting of american raptors in the place of authentic chinese ones.

  • Pachycephalosaurus sadly no scandal or politics played a part in the casting of this bonehead (i'm not calling him a name... it's the truth these guys have the thickest skulls of any dinosaur!). just rather they'd been overlooked by hollywood for far too long. rather then a grand entranced they literally rammed their way onto the big screen!

returning to the big screen

  • Gallimimus returning for brief cameos were the chinese speedsters.

  • Parasaurolophus the odd hadrosaur from alberta, who had only a brief one scene appearance in the first movie, get a much more impressive treatment in the lost world. they appear in several key shots of the dinosaur hunt (my favourite scene of the movie). good to see some dinosaur provincal park era dinosaurs finally getting acknowledged in the movies (well other then Styracosaurus).

  • Pteranodon who is not techincally a dinosaur (but rather a prehistoric animal who i said i'd cover in my reviews) has appeared in dozens of movies throughout the years, but this would be their first appearance in a film in the modern era. if only for a brief cameo at the very end of the movie as the LAST thing we see...

  • Stegosaurus another species with numerious appearances in movies in the olden days of dinosaur movies, but again no modern appearance. due to a survey of humans as to which dinosaur they most wanted to see in a new jurassic park stegosaurus was given a very prominent and key role in the film as being the second dinosaur shown on screen, and in the "awe" and "wonder" role that the brachiosaurus had been given in the first. the steggy herd scene is a standout one in this movie for us dinosaur.

  • Triceratops returns in the sequel if sadly only for a brief cameo. here you get to see my favourite food in its none sick pathetic state rampaging through the bad guy camp. you'll get an appreciatation of why we t-rexs are so big and scary... we have to be able to kill these guys!

  • Tyrannosaurus Rex the king of the dinosaurs returns once again to be king of the box office. my cousin larry returns to his role as the main dinosaur of the film. this time however he gets to play a male, and his wife would be cast to play this mate...

  • Velociraptor with their trimphant breakout role in the first movie the raptors are back (again played by bulkier and less gracile american Deinonychus) to resume their role as the "intellegent" killing machines (but as you'll see in my review i'm sick of that correlation)
easily the most recognizable and famous of the dinosaur stars is again my cousin larry. here in this famous production photo larry recieves direction from the legendary stan winston. larry had cemented himself a reputation and career as a solid easy to work with dinosaur actor. in the quest for fame and fortune larry was more then willing to put aside his destain for humans (seriously in REAL life he hates humans!) to make movies.

however when it became apparent in the writing stage that a second t-rex was going to be needed to play larry's mate speilberg thought it was going to be an interesting casting call due to t-rex solidarity. this was of course not true. humans at some point thought we t-rexs didn't really get along in big groups, but in reality we're all about team work. how else you going to take down a triceratops from a herd if not in a pack?

this resulted in the casting of the biggest and meanest female t-rex they could find (not that it was hard for them to do... girl t-rexs are the bigger meaner members of our species). thus entered teresa the tyrannosaur. much to the humans surprise her and larry got along great so shooting commenced immediately in fears they might not later on...

they got along so great that larry and teresa extended their roles as mates to real life after the movie... i personally don't get it... how a super babe like that ends up such a jerk!

also back were the three Deinonychus from the first film. they were extremely excited to get back into the public lime light, and it would be this second appearance that guranteed them equal popularity to us tyrannosaurs (a move that caused the only tension between larry and Speilberg).

when the script suddenly called for a baby t-rex i recieved my last offer from hollywood! because i'm the smallest tyrannosaur you'd ever seen it seemed the perfect part for me, and as i spoke perfect english and had extensive experience working along side humans i shoulda been a shoein. however when one of terseas nephews auditioned speilberg feel in love with the idea of an authentic "wild" t-rex baby... what does the mean "wild" we're all living in a cenizoic world here! no such thing as the lost world except in this movie!

needless to say i still hold a slight grudge about this too! but as this is a review and not an angry rant i return to the lost world...

Dinosaur Portayal

the ever famous stegosaurus herd scene from the lost world sums up how this movie nailed dinosaurs in a movie as never before... we were treated like REAL animals, and not just hollywood horror monsters!

even the stegosaurs attack sequence isn't just a typical hollywood random killer dinosaur moment. thinking that their baby is in danger due to the efforts of dr. harding the stegosaur family unit jumps into action to ward off the threat. Though giving the audience what it wants in the form of dinosaur caused danger it gets there through the means of making the dinosaurs motivation both believable and sympathizable.

this same treatment extended to all the dinosaurs (save the raptors, but i'll talk about them shortly). the tyrannosaurs rampaging exploits in this film centre around a families struggle to endure the meddling of humans on their lives.

yes there is plenty of killing and property destruction along the way, but in the end it is all sympathizable and logical. the audience can follow what's going through larry and teresa's characters heads (even if based on slightly incorrect theories by the film makers. in reality we t-rexs were more then immediate family packs. for the movie to have been correct there should have been some 20 tyrannosaurs of various ages and sizes roaming together... but the humans wouldn't have stood a chance!).

so overall the movie was amazing in dinosaur portrayal.

it does have on tyrannosaur quirk that carried over from the first movie that i didn't want to harp on when reviewing the first jurassic park (cause that first movie was such a landbreaking effort), but if i hear the saying "it can't see you if you don't move" i'm going to eat someone myself!

i don't know why larry let that one slip into the script, that alone pop up again in the sequel? we t-rexs are as stereoscopic in eyesight as our small relatives the raptors! you just stand there you make a perfect snack... if a t-rex is ever eying you down get out of there pronto... don't walk RUN!

the only other tyrannosaur bit that had me a little miffed was more due to larry's ego. in the end sequence in which the t-rex rampages through san francisco is larry blatantly trying to one up legendary movie dinosaur godzilla (my personal hero).

don't get me wrong. the san fransico rampage is still a highlight of the lost world. it serves as a brilliant contrast of the human world with an ideal dinosaur world. it encompasses and touchingly acknowledges all modern surviving dinosaurs feeling of being trapped in circumstances we can't control... well and the fantasy of exerting our full saurian might in trashing said oppressive world...

the whole situation in film is done sympathetically of daddy heroically trying to track down his kidnapped child...

it's just larry's performance now that then that bugs me. looking all smug and JERK! like. he may do our species credit on the big screen, but larry is still NO godzilla (whose movies i intend to get around to soon).

the only true disappointment is the velociraptors in the film. here again they are nothing more then "minded" killing machines...

i won't even care had they been treated like the ordinary middle of the food chain predators they are in reality, but this insistence on playing them up as the most intelligent dinosaurs yish...

so are the film makers trying to say the smarter you are the more violent you are?

never once is any real life motivation for the raptors given for their killing spree other then "stay out of the long grass"

Dinosaur Perception

despite their silly and overly violent (even for the real life brutes they are) portrayal of the raptors this movie finished off the job of propelling the dromaesaurs into fullout stardom. they now forever onward would rival us tyrannosaurs in popularity and notoriety.

the lost world continued the overall trend of jurassic park of making us cool again.

it also again presented us for the first time convincingly as real animals that once (and still do in some cases) lived.

Dinosaur Human Relations

This was an interesting movie for the issue of dinosaur human relations.

the typical theropod killing humans thus dinos=bad, stereotype persisted a little through the raptor parts of the movies. however elsewhere anytime a dinosaur was harming a human it was due mostly to human related activities.

this movie accurately despicted real life dinosaur life in a human world. actively being captured, collected, and corralled against our will by humans. it brought attention to the plight of modern dinosaurs not lucky enough to have made it in hollywood and thus have been sequestered to theme parks and musuems.

for a short time it looked as though dinosaur rights might make it into the public arena...

alas it was not too happen.

however due to it's nearly raising this issue, and other reasons i'm lead to my

Favourite Scene of the Movie

the dinosaur hunting scene is ironically my favourite scene. not because of it's coolness or fun (that'd go to parts of larry's rampage in san fransico... he may be no godzilla, but i'm a sucker for dino related property damage...), but rather it's all out honest on how humans tend to treat us modern dinosaurs. as nothing more then property and money making objects...

it also had a beautiful side benefit of showing how we actually existed millions of years ago, that had never truely been shown in a movie before. it depicted a multitude of herbvorious dinosaurs cominglating in a natural and dyamic ecosystem. in years past these guys would only have appeared one at a time either to fight or try and kill a human.

in the first jurassic park this reality of multiple dinosaurs coexisting in a natural setting had only been hinted at in the long shot with the brachiosaurs and parasaurolophus.

finally in the lost world this reality would be portrayed in its full glory (though with the dark reality of human interference over this ideal). from here on in dinosaur movies would pick up on this, and contuine to show this (a trend i'll look at in future reviews).

Final Score

so how does all this add up.

despite the amazingly outdated stereotypical meat eating dinosaurs are mindless (or sorry "minded) killing machines take on the raptors.

the ridiculous t-rexs STILL can't see none moving things plot device

the lost world is otherwise free of flaws.

it for the first time portrayed dinosaurs both plant eating AND meat eating as real animals with motivations and needs

it brought to light many human ills brought on dinosaurs as opposed to the other way round.

most importantly as i discussed at the very beginning this movie truely portrayed a DINOSAUR view of the lost world. not just the human version where dinosaur exist solely to be discovered, captured, killed, or kill...

it was shown as close to a prehistoric paradise as had ever been up till that time...

as of such i give it:

overall score: 100% !!!
